What a first session feels like

Our first session isn't about diving straight into painful memories.

We'll begin by getting to know each other, understanding what's been happening for you, what you'd like to be different, and building a sense of understanding, comfort and safety.

You will leave the first session with some practices to try out at home, that we will practice together in our first session.

I'll explain how EMDR and Somatic Therapy work, answer your questions, and together we'll decide on a pace that feels manageable.

Examples of somatic -oriented questions:

"As you notice yourself thinking about that, what else comes up? Other thoughts, feelings, pictures in you mind or feelings in your body?"  - There is no wrong answer, even 'I don't know' can make perfect sense.

Or-

"I notice as you're talking about your best friend that your eyes light up and we're kind of laughing now. Are there any feelings you notice that go with thoughts about her?" "Do you feel any difference in your shoulders right now from a few minutes ago, the same or different?"

Or-

"What would it be like if we take a pause together here, and just look around the room, maybe  notice your cat purring, or feel the weight of your dog in your lap. Just for a few moments, while we let our nervous systems have a little break."  We do this fairly often, to support the nervous system to complete and release and reorganize while we're working together. This is where a lot of the medicine is. It feels weird at first, before it feels fabulous!
