Midlife & Menopause

Menopause and Therapy:  Trauma, the Nervous System & Midlife

When Old Patterns Come to the Surface—and Something Within You Is Asking for Change

Perimenopause and menopause bring real hormonal changes.

They can also coincide with changes in emotional well-being, relationships, stress, sleep, and your sense of who you are.

You may be surprised by increased anxiety, emotional sensitivity, irritability, brain fog, burnout, difficulty sleeping—or simply the feeling that you don't quite feel like yourself anymore.

These experiences are real.

Hormones matter, and I encourage women to seek appropriate medical support for symptoms and concerns related to perimenopause and menopause.

At the same time, I'm deeply interested in what else may be happening during this season of life.

Midlife can bring us face-to-face with our nervous system, our history, our relationships, and patterns we've carried—sometimes remarkably well—for decades.

Rather than assuming something is "going wrong," we can become curious about what may be asking for our attention.

Why Is This Bothering Me Now?

It's a question many women ask.

Why am I struggling with this now?

You may have understood your past, made peace with certain experiences, or simply gotten very good at moving forward.

Perhaps staying busy helped.

Perhaps you focused on raising children, building a career, caring for other people, keeping relationships together, meeting expectations, or simply doing what life required.

And then something shifts.

Children grow up. Parents age. Relationships change. Losses accumulate. Your body changes. Roles that once defined you may no longer fit.

And sometimes there's simply less capacity—or less willingness—to keep overriding what you've been carrying.

Old relationship wounds, chronic stress, protective patterns, or unresolved experiences may become harder to ignore.

That doesn't necessarily mean you're going backward.

It may mean something within you is ready for your attention.

When the Old Ways of Coping Don't Work Anymore

The strategies that helped us through one chapter of life aren't always the ones we need for the next.

Maybe you've spent years being the capable one.

The caretaker.

The peacekeeper.

The one who pushes through.

The one who doesn't need much.

Those ways of coping may have served an important purpose. But eventually, they can become exhausting.

Midlife can offer an opportunity to understand these patterns differently—not with judgment, but with curiosity and compassion for the ways your mind and body learned to protect you.

And then we can begin asking a different question:

What do I need now?

Therapy for the Woman You're Becoming

Through virtual EMDR, Somatic Experiencing®, attachment-based therapy, mindfulness, and creative approaches, I help women explore both the emotional and nervous system patterns that may be contributing to how they feel.

Together, we'll create space to understand what's happening in your mind and body while helping your nervous system develop greater steadiness, flexibility, and resilience.

Our work may include:

  • Healing the lingering effects of trauma and chronic stress
  • Understanding and regulating your nervous system
  • Navigating anxiety, grief, burnout, and major life transitions
  • Reconnecting with your body with greater compassion
  • Exploring boundaries, identity, and changing relationships
  • Letting go of roles or patterns that no longer fit
  • Making space for new priorities and a life that feels more like your own
  • Integrating spirituality, mindfulness, or holistic practices when they're meaningful to you

You don't need to arrive knowing exactly what's wrong—or even knowing exactly what you want instead.

Sometimes we begin simply with the recognition that something doesn't feel right anymore.

Menopause Isn't Something I Want to "Fix"

I don't see menopause as a problem to solve.

It's a biological transition that can bring very real challenges and deserves knowledgeable medical care when needed.

But it can also coincide with a profound season of questioning, change, and self-discovery.

For many women, midlife becomes a time to slow down and listen differently.

What am I carrying that isn't mine anymore?

What have I tolerated for too long?

What does my body need?

Which relationships still fit?

Who am I when I'm not taking care of everyone else?

What do I want the next chapter of my life to feel like?

I've Walked Through This Season, Too

Having moved through this season of life myself, I know it can ask difficult and unexpected questions.

I also know that midlife can hold possibilities we may not have imagined when we were younger.

There can be more clarity.

More choice.

More permission to stop performing old roles.

More capacity to listen to yourself.

And more freedom to decide what you want to carry forward—and what you're finally ready to put down.

You don't have to become someone new. This may be a time to reconnect with more of who you already are.

If this season of life is asking something new of you, I'd be honored to explore it with you.
